When I was 14 yrs old I joined the church in the San Lorenzo 2nd ward! It was a wonderful ward. I had many great examples for me to learn about the church and to have my testimony grow. My dad joined the church a year after I joined. My mom had joined a year before me. Years later my dad was the bishop of the San Lorenzo 2nd ward and two weeks ago our son in law Joe was sustained as the new bishop of the San Lorenzo ward. My favorite scripture is 3John:4 "I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth" Bishop Joe will be a fabulous bishop because he loves the Lord and he loves people. We're so happy for their wonderful family for this huge blessing to serve!

The rest of the family were hitting away....many home runs from John & his dad!! The best part was after and we went to Rita's!!

The first Sunday we were there I helped Katie with her primary class...I use the term HELP loosely.....she did all the work but I did get a "I LOVE PRIMARY" sticker! It was fun to be with our children and grandchildren!

Don & I went to Sacramento this past weekend to see Clayton and Caroline & her family. Clayton is doing a month rotation at UC Davis! We had fun seeing them. We lived in this house 35 yrs ago when Sarah was born in Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento! Clayton & me in front of the room he's renting for a month.....I'm sure it was a nice neighborhood along time ago but not so much now!

Caroline & Di invited us over to their beautiful home in Folsom to swim & a BBQ..(yummy) What a wonderful family! We had such a good time!

40th wedding anniversary

We flew up to the bay area for our 40th wedding anniversary! We went to the Oakland temple where we were married 40 happy years ago!
We look the same....don't you think? We feel the same inside though! But when I look in the mirror I go..."MOM"???

We went to one of our favorite spots....The Ice Creamery in Castro Valley.....yummy!

Then we went to Twain Harte for the weekend just like we did 40 yrs ago! So relaxing and fun!

To finish off our trip we went to church with Sarah's family and then she had our family over for a BBQ. All of our six children took a family picture and then Sarah put it together for us. It's FABULOUS! I enjoy it every day. Thank you so much! We love our wonderful family. We're so blessed!

Auntie Finn gave Gredtel & Mayzie the "Pea" book. I must of read it to them a hundred times in one week! I know it by heart and when I got home Marylynn gave Cricket & Buster the book and said "grandma would love to read it to you" .....she was right....it's so nice to read to your grandchildren :) (though I know I look like I'm on drugs in the picture)

Clark didn't really care for his grandma the 1st day BUT after that one bad day....he was mine! I love cute chubby babies. Why does the chubby legs on babies look so cute and it doesn't look good on me.....just a random thought!

Katie & I went to Jiggers Ice Cream Shop with John's family.....Clayton was under the stairs studing for his boards and his children were a sleep! The town looks like Twain Harte...good company and yummy ice cream.

Historic and Spirit Filled Nauvoo Day 1

This is day one which was Saturday, May 22nd. We arrived after 2 pm and checking into our motel room which felt great with the powerful air conditioning. We got something to eat and then proceeded straight to the temple which you could not miss as you drove into town. You take this sweeping right turn and up in your face to the left is this very large and impressive temple. It is up on the hill overlooking the residential area of town which was down near the Mississippi river.

We missed the last wagon ride which takes you you through town and identifies the scenic spots and houses which the prominent leaders lived and the primary location of the businesses. Most all have been renovated and includes time appropriate furnishings. We went and visited some of the sites which included the Smith family residence they first lived in, the grave sites of Joseph, Hyrum, Emma, Luch Mack, and Joseph Smith Sr. John loved the Family Living Center and then went back and ate at the Hotel Nauvoo and got ready for church on Sunday.
This is the Smith Family burial site where Joseph, Hyrum, and Emma along with many other family members were buried, including Lucy Mack and Joseph Smith Sr. The remains of Hyrum, Joseph, and Emma are a few yards away in an above ground marble tomb which is owned by the Community of Christ, which was formerely the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

This monument to Joseph and Brigham Young is near the end of the road referred to as the Trail of Hope as the saints were driven out of Nauvoo in early February during driving snow storm which froze the river but did allow the saints to cross more easily. This represents Joseph instructing Brigham on the eventual trek west and their route.

John outside the Family Living Center where they did demonstrations of how the saints during that period made candles, rope, baked bread, sewed clothing, made barrels, and made pots from clay. John saw a nearby store and wondered why they just didn't buy them like everyone else does today.

This is the monument just below the temple of Joseph and Hyrum before their fateful trip to Carthage to turn themselves in to authorities to answer charges of disturbing the peace. They were guaranteed safety by Governor Ford and had the charges modified so they could hold them. This moment depicts the last time they would see Nauvoo, and stopped just below the temple knowing that they would never return.

This is the outside of the front entrance of the temple. What a beautiful and inspriring ediface even by today's standards.

Nauvoo Trip and Baseball too

John and I talked during our visit on Christmas how fun it would be to go to St. Louis and go to a ballgame, travel up to Nauvoo for 3 days and then end up in Chicago and go to a Cubs game. Well, this is exactly what we did and had a wonderful time! We arrived on Friday afternoon and attended a night game between the Cards and Angels. Here are some pictures of the ball park and the game. What great devoted fans and a great place to watch a game. John did a great job in getting us tickets which he did several months ago.

After the game we went to our motel room and decided we would get up at 7:00 am and get ready and head up to Nauvoo. I woke up a little before 7:00 and John was still sound asleep, so I got up and showered, repacked, and read my scriptures, but at 8:00 John was still sleeping. I put my foot on his bed as I was reading and he sat stright up, looked around and I then asked him how he slept. He could not hear me so he took out his earplugs. I asked him how long he had been wearing earplugs and he said that was his first time. He woke up at 1:30 am to my snoring and could not go back to sleep.

He decided he had to do something to get some sleep, so he dressed, went downstairs and asked where the nearest all night pharmacy was and drove there, picked up some earplugs and for good measure sleeping pills as well. He was still a little groggy but did get ready and we headed up to Nauvoo. He was still a little groggy for some of the day....not sure how many pills he took.

This is the outside of the ballpark in St. Louis as we were walking up to the front gate. What a crowd they had even 2 hours before the game started.

Here is John as we are waiting in line to get in. As you can see it was nice and warm and were anxiously wating to eat the 3 hot dogs we devoured. Reminded me of when he was a boy and taking him to see the A's play in Oakland. We always took a bagful of junk food plus eating hot dogs, ice cream, and soda. Usually John would have to lie down in the back of the car because his stomach hurt. Wonder why???

Here is just one of the lines outside the ballpark waiting for the gate to open. It seemed like everyone was wearing red which is the Cardinals team color.

Just one shot of the ballpark as we went out to right field during batting practice. John got great seats for both games and sat on first base line near right field and very close to the playing field.

I bet you think these are two of the players before they dressed and went out to the field. No, just John and I with the caps we bought before we ate 3 hot dogs. Well, as I think about it, we had already eaten at least 2.

Month of May

When Sarah and Joe were on their cruise to Mexico they brought us back this chair hammock. We now have it hanging from our tree which is a real favorite with both Cricket and Buster.

For Mary's birthday, Marylynn and Cricket treated her to a pedicure and here they are just after they got back. This included foot massage as well as sitting in the vibrating chair. Looks like Cricket's may have been in the electric chair?

Happy Mother's Day!

I want to wish the special women in my life a Happy Mother's Day and let them know how much they have added to my life.

First is my own mother who passed away over 27 years ago and have missed her and the time she could have spent with our kids and grandkids if she was living now. She taught me and my brother Dave how to work, to be responsible, and provided a wonderful childhood filled with fun and security with parents who loved each other and their children.

Mom spent hours doing things with us which included the swim club during the summer, attending endless baseball games, being a den mother, volunteering with the PTA, and many other activities. Own home was a place where we felt comfortable to invite our friends to and was the hub many childhood activites. Mom loved to laugh and was very loud and always warm. I don't think our windows were ever closed. She would have loved being with her grandchildren and as well as the great grandchildren. We miss you Mom.

Next is my wife Mary. She is the center of our home and always has been. She is not just fun and adoreable, but hard working, loves all people and sees the best in each. She is often the brunt of most of the teasing of by our children but can dish it our with the best of them.

She is the blue print for our daughters on what a Mom should be. And why is that you might ask? It is because they know she loves them unconditionally and that she is their best friend and would do anything for them. She never has shied away from disciplining our children or being "brutally blunt", but they always knew she loved them unconditionally. She has strong faith in her Heavenly Father and lives her life accordingly.

I love and admire my own daughters and daughters-in-law. In my own mind, I consider each as my own daughters I don't distinguish between the two. I love you girls for all you do for your families and your teaching, training, and joy that exists in your homes.

I know it is not easy and our society today does not always acknowledge the efforts spent doing all that is necessary to nurture and train your children. It is not fun to change diapers, help with homework, be involved or just call and talk to your children's teacher, potty train, prepare countless meals, keep up the laundry, be the chauffer for games and practices, and so many other things.

I love being in your homes and spending time with our grandchildren. I appreciate how welcome we feel and how you carve out time for us. I appreciate living with Marylynn and her family and wish we could be near to the each of our other children, but maybe someday.

I wish each of you a wonderful day and let you know how much I love you all and admire all you do for those in your families. I believe women are blessed with a very kind spirit that know how to nurture and you each have that in abundace. I love you more than you will ever know.

Early Christmas Eve

Before we left for Christmas in Pennsylvania we had an early Christmas Eve with Marylynn and Tyler on Saturday, 12/19. We started with dinner at Ruby's at South Coast Plaza and the kids had special hats made. We then had our Christmas program and opened up a few gifts. One of the most wonderful parts of Christmas is the time you spend with family and to participate in the excitement of children.

Buster looks like his head is being devoured by the frog hat he had made. Of course Cricket has a princess hat.

We got home and read the Christmas story in Luke 2 and enjoyed the family and the warm fire.

Awkward Pictures

Sometimes you look at an old picture and you wonder, "What were they thinking?" when you see something especially awkward or embarrassing. Well, we have just something that fits this scenario. This is our daughter Katie going to a Mutual activity, and I know you were thinking she was off to high school.

Twain Harte vacation

39 happy years of going to Twain Harte! We went on our honeymoon...the vacation of NOTHING.....we go to the beach....eat....watch movies....then repeat the next day!
Sarah was such a fun beach bunny this year...even diving off the diving board at the rock with her dad and the kids!
With the help of auntie Marylynn...Graydon jumped!
Our favorite spot every afternoon...the snack shack.....yummy!

This is from our trip back east in April with John and I going to see the Yankees play the Orioles in Baltimore on just the 3rd game of the season. What was even more special was that John treated me and even though he had undergone shoulder surgery the day before, went with me even with the pain.

We had the best hot dogs outside the park at Boog Powell's BBQ. Time you get to spend with one of your sons is very special for every father and especially for me.

We are are at John's house just about to leave for the park. We left early so we could see batting practice and got there so early that they had not even opened up the park. One of us is pretty intense (well...maybe both of us). Sorry Jaime.

Here we are just outside the ballpark and I must say, it is a wonderful place to see a ball game.

This is before the game started and the fans just beginning to fill up some of the seats. As you can see this is a shot of left field from the 3rd base line. John got us great seats which included having ushers come fill our orders for food from our seats and not missing any of the game. We ate two hot dogs apiece, potato chips, a box of ding dongs, peanuts, plus drinks. I am not sure why John felt sick on the way home. Maybe a reaction to the medication.

This is a picture of center field and the score board. We had great weather and the only thing wrong was that the Yankees won.

Katie and Gredtel are enjoying ice cream at Katie's after jumping and sliding at Bounce U. Gredel likes ice cream almost as much as her Mom.

After getting beat up, Tyler now has to fight Clayton for his ice cream. Tyler said he has to fight for his food at home too and this was nothing new.

This is Tyler and I at the Bounce U. I hope the authorities in Pennsylvania don't decide to come after me for child abuse. Not my finest momemt, but Tyler had fun (I hope).

What a great trip we had visiting our family on the east coast. We took a trip to upstate New York with Marylynn and Tyler to visit a church history site in Palmyra, then down to Pennsylvania to visit John and Jaime along with Katie and Clayton. We made our trip to mecca at Hersheyworld, John and I went to Baltimore to see the the Orioles play the Yankees, a trip to Gettysburg, and much, much, more. We celebrated Gredtel's 3rd birthday and celebrated Easter at Katie's, but I think the kids favorite was visiting the bounce house while poor John was recuperating from shoulder surgery earlier that day. Enjoy the pictures...

We had great weather at Palmyra and the the morning we left it got very cold and snowed.

This was about the time that Joseph Smith received the First Vision, and as you can see the trees are still without the beautiful green leaves, but you can see the beginning of spring growth all around, much like the beginning of the restoration which began with the First Vision.

This is the bridge just outside the Smith Family home towards the Grove. What a great family!

This is the framed home that Alvin started prior to his death for his parents, Joseph Smith Sr. and his mother Lucy. It was 3/4 finished when he passed away and charged his brother Hyrum to finish it.

This is inside the framed home. It was quite an improvement from the log cabin that the family lived in previously which is only a few hundred yards from this site.

Today we painted fire hydrants for the City of FV! GOOD TIMES! This is the last hydrant and we were joined by Megan, Yvette and Bob Riley.Here we are at the last hydrant we did. Some people say that a couple begins to resemble each other as the years go on. What do you think?

We now have proof that Mary was an active participant, at least for the last one. Prior to this we worked alone and Mary got her lawn chair to sit in while she painted.

John, Jaime, and family, arrived in mid-February for a vacation and visit with the family. We started with a trip to Disneyland, then up to the Bay Area to visit with the Tim and Karen, Sarah and Joe, Matt, and the kids. On Saturday we went to the Academy of Sciences in Berkeley, to the Ice Creamery for lunch, and to Tim and Karen's for the evening. On Sunday we went to Sarah's for dinner. As you can see, a lot packed into a few days.

On Sunday, we went to Sarah and Joe's for dinner. Being with family is great and we appreciate everyone putting their life on hold for our visit. This was actually taken on Satuday. Dad is now 86, and amazing how well he gets around and loves to chase the ladies. I'm not sure what he thinks he would do if he caught one.

Jordan is our oldest grandchild. We ADORE him! He turned 11 yrs old in Dec.
One of my favorite things to do with him is to make cookies!
He's a great older brother and he's so kind to all of his many cousins! He loves sports but does a great job in the kitchen cooking....his cookies were so yummy. Jordan ...thank you for spending time with your grandma...I love you :)

Mary and I traveled to northern California to spend time with our childen in the Bay Area. We got there late Tuesday evening and went home Friday afternoon. As always, Karen and Sarah take great care of us and we love being with them and our 5 grandsons.

The first two photos are of the photo that Mary had enlarged and framed from the art teacher at the high school. It is perfect for the "Man's Room" as you can see.

The balance are at Christmas Eve at Lisa and Dave's home in Tracy. Lisa is Karen's sister and they welcomed us as members of the family. Thanks so much Dave and Lisa and of course Karen.

One of the favorite gifts that the boys opened up on Christmas Eve was the Box of Boogers. Jordan is, well, eating them and seems to enjoy them. Margarite, Karen's Mom, said that this is a "Barnum thing" as are most of the gross things the boys do. I must say I agree with her. Many people have told us that their children could not have survived if they were in our family. I wonder what they mean by that?

This is Christmas morning with Tim and Karen and the boys. We got up and opened gifts, then had cinamon buns for breakfast...yum! The boys big gift from Santa was a 19" flat panel TV that is now set up in their room with the Playstation 3 brought upstairs also.

The boys have individual gifts that they share with one another, with the exception of clothing. As Drew opens his gifts he will say, Jordan, look what WE got!

Mary and I gave eachother coats for Christmas. Mary got a wool double breasted coat and I have a new leather jacket. What a good looking young couple. This is taken at Sarah's home on Christmas morning and notice the lights in the doorway. Sarah lOVES lights!

On Friday we all went bowling and then went to the Ice Creamery for lunch. This was the day before Jordan's 11th birthday and I don't think he objected to two consecutive days of focusing on him. I know I wouldn't mind.

I know it is not December yet, but we (meaning me) put up the outside lights today. It is less than 4 weeks before Christmas and we want to enjoy the fruits of these labors. We will be with our kids in the Bay Area for Chirstmas as we went back east last year.

We wish we had everyone close enough to all be together, but all our kids make us feel very welcome and wanted as we visit. Being with the grandkids is the best.

Here we are at Sarah's house for Thanksgiving dinner with Great Grandpa Barnum, Joe, Sarah, Jonah, Graydon, Maddox, and ourselves. As always, Sarah prepared a wonderful meal and as always a good time. As you can see, Maddox is the center of attention with everyone wanting to hold him, including his big brother Jonah.

Tim and Karen and the boys spent the day in Tracy with Karen's family and later Joe and Sarah went to Fremont to be with Joe's family. Mary and I went to the movies to see Quantom Solace.

My brother Dave came down from Chico on Friday and Dad and I enjoyed catching up while Mary, Sarah, Karen and the kids went to the movies. Later that afternoon Mary and I traveled home to return in less than 4 weeks for Christmas.

John and Jamie arrived on Tuesday afternoon and enjoyed a relaxing pedicures. Yes I said John and Jaime. I think John enjoyed this more than Jaime. We went out to dinner and then the next day met up with the honeymooners at Disneyland. It was an unexpected 98 degrees that day and luckily we did not have to wait in any line very long. The weather turned out perfect for the trip as they really enjoyed Catalina for the following 3 days.

On Saturday, September 20, 2008 Maddox William Junsay was born after 14 1/2 hours of labor. He weighs in at 8 lbs. 14 oz. and 20 1/4 inches long. He is prompt as he was born exactly on his due date and slept through his blood tests, hepititus shot, hearing test, etc. He does however enjoy nursing and sleeping.

Mary and I were in town to celebrate my and my Dad's birtdays and had to adjust our plans to attend the A's game with my brother Dave and my niece Lindsey along with some of the grandkids, and instead took care of Jonah and Graydon at my Dad's house with family. Priceless! This included going to breakfast with everyone and later to the Ice Creamery before visiting with our new grandson.

It won't be long until he will be running and wanting to play. I better get in shape to keep up.

Everyone get prepared in different ways to prepare themselves to perform priesthood ordinances, but I must say, John is unique.

The Game was rained out, but that did not stop us from enjoying hot dogs and funnel cake. We went from the ball park to the movies to see Dark Knight
Tyler and Buster shared a birthday party capped off with a Spiderman birthday cake. Buster just started wearing glasses and he seems to enjoy munching on the nose pads. Here are six of our grandkids. Taking their picture at one time is like catching ants at a picnic.
Lily and Cricket get underneath the end table and and do their "girl things" which is lots of giggling and imaginary games.
John, Jamie, and family. Lily is zoning, but is very cute.

Tyler turned 8 on August 31st and we traveled to Pennsylvania to attend and enjoy our 3 of our children's families also. It was great and as always, John and Jamie were hosts and make our stay wonderful.

Below are some of the pictures of some of the events which started with a rained out baseball game on Friday night, but we went to the movies instead. On Saturday we had a combined birthday party for Tyler and Buster, and Sunday was the baptism.

Commuting Nightmare

On Wednesday while commuting home on the 405 freeway on may way home from work, the traffic stopped in Long Beach, as usual. This time however, I heard a load crash and a split second later, I felt my head hit the sun viror or winshield and felt my car being pushed into the car in front of me.

The driver of a Ford F150 pick up truck had not been paying attention to the traffic and plowed into a Mercades Benz right in back of me which hit me. He must have been traveling at least 30 MPH and I did not hear any skidding.

We pulled over and took down all the pertinent information and the driver of the truck acknowledged his error and fortunately has insurance. I have had an appraisal done and should have my car into the body shop this week. No one was hurt except I had the skin taken off my forehead right below my hairline. Could be a lot worse.

Twain Harte 2008

Clayton did really well at all the card games and makes me wonder where he practices these skills. He was playing speed with Sarah and destroyed her. Maybe he plays after he gets through studying at 3 am each day.

Cricket was on the slide within the first 5 minutes after arriving at the lake. Reminds me of her mother Marylynn. Well, not now, but when she was her age.
We took Jonah and Cricket to Pee Wee golfing. After the 8th hole, Cricket said she was hot and wanted to go to the Lake. She was a good sport and Jonah was exceptional. Move over Tiger Woods.

Mayzie surround by some good looking cousins, Jordan, Drew, and Jonah.

This was Mayzie's first trip to Twain Harte and looks like she has the hang of it. Grandma looks like she is enjoying the beach also.

Our annual painful experience of the pictures of the family. No one wants to do it, but everyone wants to have it. Aren't these grandkids the best? Must be good genes! Poor Buster had the first accident when a flying pair of goggles accidentally hit him in the head. I think I felt much worse than poor Buster.
Every family has some slugs who vegetate on the beach when all the fun is elsewhere. I am not saying that these are our slugs, but you see what you see.

We were so happy Matt came to visit us
this weekend. We had a nice visit. It was fun to spend time with him.
We went to see the Indiana Jones movie and ate alot of ice cream!

A Big thank you to Sarah, Joe, Jonah, Graydon, Karen, Tim, Jordan, & Drew & of course Donnie for coming to help me celebrate my birthday and Mother's day. We had a great time....family...PRICELESS!

May 10th...Mary's 60th birthday party..we're off to Disneyland Disneyland gave me a birthday button
